10 foods to avoid if you have anxiety

Below is a list of the top 10 foods that I personally avoid in the management of my anxiety, review journal

1. Caffeine

A known stimulant and psychoactive drug, caffeine has long had a reputation for triggering the body's fight-or-flight response. Very similar to the symptoms associated with anxiety, caffeine can also make its users feel nervous, nauseous, light headed, jittery and yes, even anxious. If you're suffering through anxiety, I recommend reconsidering that morning cup of coffee and instead opt for an herbal tea or a green juice.

2. Artificial and refined sugars

This is one that seems hard to ignore simply due to the fact that sugar hides in everything! Studies have shown that although sugar does not cause anxiety, it does create changes in your body that can exacerbate anxiety symptoms and impairs the body's ability to effectively cope with stress.

A sugar crash is similar to a caffeine crash, and can also cause mood changes, heart palpitations, difficulty concentrating and fatigue— all of which can be interpreted as the beginning stages of an anxiety or panic attack. 

3. Gluten

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye products. For many anxiety sufferers, gluten can also be a huge trigger for anxiety symptoms. Research has now confirmed that people with Celiac disease and gluten intolerances (like myself) are at higher risk for anxiety, depression and mood disorders. Talk to your doctor about getting tested for Celiac or a gluten intolerance. Cutting out gluten could be the difference between living with anxiety and managing it for the better.

4. Processed foods

Generally, processed foods are high in the previous two items mentioned on this list, as well as a bunch of additional additives and preservatives. Refined flours and sugars are said to feed the harmful bacteria and microbes in the gut. With more research being conducted, the general consensus is that gut health is a major contributor to chronic anxiety, and many mood disorders can be treated by proliferating good bacteria in your gut. So, next time you're at a family BBQ, avoid the grilled hot dogs and opt for the fruit salad.

5. Alcohol

We all enjoy an occasional drink, right? But what happens when that one glass of wine at dinner turns into three glasses of wine and dessert? Alcohol in excess or at all (for some), is said to induce the symptoms of anxiety. Alcohol is a toxin that leads to improper mental and physical functioning, by negatively impacting the levels of serotonin (the feel good chemical) in the brain.

Alcohol also affects the body and nervous system, and can cause hypersensitivity, increased heart rate, lowered blood sugar levels and acute dehydration. If you're going out to dinner with a few colleagues, you may want to skip the drink menu this time around.

6. Dairy

I'm sure we all remember those Got Milk ads that popped up during the commercial break of our favorite TV shows. Well research shows that people who have anxiety say they've noticed an increase in anxiety symptoms within minutes of consuming dairy products. About 10 percent of adults are lactose intolerant, and even more are thought to have difficulty digesting the casein found in cow's milk. Have I mentioned its impact on children?

The truth is, dairy is inflammatory. It wreaks havoc on the digestive system, causing, bloating, diarrhea and constipation, among other things. So if you're looking for ways to manage your anxiety, I guess the answer to the question Got Milk?, should be a big, fat, NO! 

7. Soda

Don't think for a second because you started a sugar cleanse a week ago that you can still indulge in America's favorite soft drink. In addition to the artificial food coloring and additives found in soda, aspartame is one of the most common (and possibly dangerous) ingredients found in things like diet soda and chewing gum. In addition to blocking the production of serotonin in our brains (like sugar), Aspartame is also believed to be responsible for headaches, insomnia, anxiety, mood swings and has been linked to certain forms of cancer. 8. Fried foods

Not only are fried foods difficult to digest, but they also have very little nutrition. Combining poor food choices with unhealthy cooking processes is a sure-fire way to exacerbate your anxiety symptoms. Most fried foods like French fries, chicken and onion rings are cooked in hydrogenated oil. It not only does a number on your waistline, but it's also terrible for your heart.

Fried foods also may increase your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Moderation is key. The next time you find yourself at Five Guys, try the kiddie size fry instead of the large.

9. Fruit juice

Fruit juice, just like soda and other store-bought beverages is packed with sugar. There are three different types of sugar: sucrose, glucose and fructose. Fructose is the sugar naturally found in fruits and vegetables, and is usually added to fruit juice and fruit flavored drinks. The problem is the body only processed fructose in the liver and is not the body's preferred energy source. What protects us from absorbing too much fructose when we eat fruits and vegetables is the fiber. When we get rid of the fiber, we put our bodies at risk of overconsumption. 

So if you want fruit juice, make it at home, and if you're an avid juicer (like me), I recommend limiting the amount of fruit you put into your green juices. Stick to the 80/20 rule and you'll be good to go.

10. Foods high in sodium

By now, we should all be aware of the fat-free craze of the past few decades. The sad reality of this fad is that most foods that are fat free are actually high in sugar and/or sodium. Researchers have concluded that too much sodium in our diets can have a negative effect on the body's neurological system, causing fatigue and damaging the immune system. A restful sleep is a major key to a healthy mind, mood and body. Not to mention, the overconsumption of sodium leads to weight gain, high blood pressure and water retention.

Salt is essential in maintaining good health and a balanced diet, but too much can trigger panic episodes and send you down a slippery slope of anxiety, panic and depression.

Before Taylor Swift allegedly tried undercutting Scottish DJ Calvin Harris by leaking her involvement in his new single, an 11-year-old pre-fame Taylor Swift was trying to undercut another love interest.

A few things to clarify here: The year was 2001. I was 14 at the time and Swift did not like me in the least (nor I her), but the character she played in a Berks Youth Theater version of “Bye Bye Birdie” was in love with the character I played.

But off stage, Swift and my “relationship” could not have been more different than our fictional alter egos, Kim MacAfee and Conrad Birdie. She was the established star of the group and I was a newcomer, spurred to do the play simply because it seemed like a fun thing. However, (pardon the ego), I was quite good at my role and Swift didn’t seem to enjoy sharing the spotlight.

In all fairness, she was an ambitious young girl who was destined to go far and I was a brash intruder into her world.

It’s understandable we didn’t get along.

However, it doesn’t seem as if Taylor Swift has changed all that much from her days of ripping down my photos. Only now, she’s become famous for ripping her various ex-boyfriends in songs after their breakups.

So don’t feel too bad, Calvin. I’ve been there.

'Pokemon Go' takes world by storm, but sparks controversy

Games review, “Pokemon Go” has become a phenomenon since its launch last week, although the location-based Nintendo game is sparking controversy at sites such as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Arlington National Cemetery and Auschwitz.

The Washington Post reports that the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C is a “PokeStop” on the game where players can get free items within “Pokemon Go’s” digital world. Museum officials told The Post that they are trying to get the museum excluded from the game.

Reports have also emerged of people playing “Pokemon Go” at Arlington National Cemetery, prompting officials to urge visitors to refrain from playing the game at the final resting place for thousands of America’s veterans

Inappropriate gaming has been reported at other landmarks, such as the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. New York magazine says that an unnamed source was able to “capture” a "Pokemon Go" character at Auschwitz, which may be marked as a PokeStop. The report notes, however, that the game has not yet launched for users in Europe, so confirming

this might be difficult.

The game is the the latest installment of Nintendo’s popular late 90s/early 2000s video game and has taken the world by storm since its launch, creating a completely new kind of gaming phenomenon.

Like the original game "Pokemon Go" is based on the Japanese tradition of bug catching, and 151 creatures are presented for snagging, according to Vox. 

While the old, familiar faces are front and center, "Pokemon Go" has taken location-based gaming to a whole new level. The free app-based game creates a sort of "digital world" around physical sites using local time and GPS location, so that digital creatures “interact” with players in real time.

Lanched on July 6, the game was installed on more U.S. Android phones than Tinder by the following day, according to app analytics specialist Similar Web. On July 8 "Pokemon Go" was installed on 5.16 percent of all Android phones in the U.S, it said.

Similar Web estimates that over 60 percent of U.S.-based installers are using the app daily. As of July 8, the game had an average usage time of 43 minutes and 23 seconds per day, surpassing other popular apps like Snapchat and Instagram. The app is poised to unseat Twitter if its popularity continues, according to several observers.

Metrics aside, "Pokemon Go" is also taking the social world by storm, with some interesting aftershocks. Cosmopolitan reported that some users are meeting on the app, hitting it off and going out on dates. Users are sharing their updates everywhere, from the delivery room, to a creepy white van. The Westboro Baptist Church was even caught up in the brouhaha after a user named Pinkrose claimed its location for a pink character named LoveIsLove. Westboro countered by creating a Jigglypuff.

Some users are also resorting to shenanigans that Pikachu probably wouldn't approve of. On Sunday, Missouri police confirmed that four teens in the St. Louis area were luring victims to locations where they could collect characters, and robbing them. The police confirmed that the teens were ages 16 to 18 and had committed nearly a dozen robberies in the area.

"Pokemon Go’s" dark side doesn’t end there. According to Popular Science, the game has sparked privacy concerns by requested full access to users' Google accounts. However, Niantic, the app’s developer, told Business Insider that the extensive information request was the result of a bug on the iOS version of "Pokemon Go" and was not used to look at players' account information, other than their email address and user ID. The bug will be fixed, it added.

1. The Founding Fathers penned the first couple of drafts of the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper, since at the time at least 75 percent of all the world’s paper was made from cannabis hemp fiber. The democratic delegates eked out the document’s first and second drafts—completed on June 28th and July 2nd 1776, respectively—on Dutch hemp paper. The final document had a more official air, though, as it was printed on parchment.

2. Months before World War Two culminated in the absolute decimation of Hiroshima, the Japanese found themselves in a bit of a pinch. Making the most of the strong air current across the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese crafted what was likely the first intercontinental weapon system and attached bombs to hydrogen balloons, in what was known as the Fu-Go campaign. Depending on weather conditions, it would take each balloon anywhere from 30 to 60 hours to reach the United States. Researchers estimate that the Japanese said sayonara to around 9,000 bombs—which were approximately 33 feet in diameter— to the United States, with 342 known to have reached the United States. Many of them landed and exploded, with one even killing a whole family in Oregon in 1944. Rumor has it that there may still be dozens – potentially still active – lying around.

3. The Liberty Bell is an iconic American relic. Unfortunately, its tolling hasn’t been heard since George Washington’s Birthday in 1846. The bell, which used to reside in Pennsylvania’s Independence Hall, was erected in August 1752 and was first rung in July 8, 1776, to celebrate the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Though no conclusive evidence exists to determine when the bell first cracked (some argue that Liberty split during the Revolutionary War in 1824, others speculate that it happened during the funeral of Chief Justice John Marshall in 1835), it was the cherry tree chopping president’s birthday that cracked the bell beyond repair.

The Democratic Party’s donkey symbol was adopted in 1828, when, during an election, Andrew Jackson’s opponents called him a jackass. 6. Aside from being the first President of the United States, George Washington was also quite the booze hound – and manufacturer. Washington was a savvy businessman who owned one of the largest distilleries in 18th century America, and by 1799 alone he was producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey. In 1797 George Washington’s farm manager, a Scot named James Anderson, convinced his employer that producing whiskey made from corn and rye grown on the plantation would be a natural complement to his milling business. Washington erected the 2,250 square foot distillery, making it among the largest whiskey distilleries in early America. Today, the two-story stone distillery is reconstructed and operates seasonally, mashing, fermenting and distilling grain as it was done in the eighteenth century.

7. On September 25, 1820, Salem, NJ held a trial against…tomatoes. The general populace believed that tomatoes were poisonous, so Robert Johnson stepped in to prove them wrong. To do so, he bravely stood before a crowd at the courthouse and consumed a whole basket of the delectable fruit. Not dying after consumption, the trial was promptly dismissed.

8. In 1842, the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas (or Adelsverein as it was known in German) set its immigration aspirations on the Republic of Texas. The society was first established in Germany, with the ultimate end goal being swapping spurs for lederhosen and cultivating a German state. By 1847, over 5,000 German immigrants had established five settlements across the state. A further 2,000 immigrants had arrived by 1853, but the movement failed due to lack of planning, mistrust and bad business sense.

The nation’s 30th Vice President, Charles Gates Dawes, has the distinction of being not only a banker and politician prior to assuming the role of Calvin Coolidge’s VP, but also a hit music composer. He enjoyed playing the piano and composing music, and co-wrote the Melody in A Major (or Dawes Melody) in 1911. Songwriter Carl Sigman added lyrics in 1951, changed the name to It’s All in the Game, and Tommy Edwards later performed it in 1958.The tune topped the charts for six weeks, and has since been covered by Cliff Richard, Nat “King” Cole, Isaac Hayes, Barry Manilow, and other artists. Sadly, Dawes couldn’t hear the fruit of his creative labors; he had been dead for seven years by the time Tommy Edwards first performed the tune.

10. The United States’ current 50 star flag was designed as a school project by 17 year-old Robert G. Heft. Heft received a B- for his efforts, but his teacher said he would reconsider the grade if Congress accepted Heft’s ostensibly mediocre design. In 1959, that’s precisely what happened, and Heft’s design was selected to be the latest iteration of the American flag. His teacher promptly changed the grade to an A.

California Man Faces Charge in Arson at Google Headquarters

A Northern California man who said Google was "watching him" faces federal charges in three late-night attacks on the company's Silicon Valley headquarters, including accusations of tossing Molotov cocktails and opening fire on a building, authorities say.

No one was hurt in the attacks that took place in May and June, though one of the Internet search giant's self-driving cars was destroyed by fire.

Raul Diaz, 30, faces an arson charge in the first attack that began shortly before midnight May 19 at the company's massive campus in Mountain View, California, according to a federal complaint. An employee called police after seeing a man throw a beer bottle at a Google mapping car and then watching the area burst into flames. The fire bombs landed at the rear of the vehicle, which sustained minimal damage.

Police say they recovered fragments from two bottles of Blue Moon beer.

Charges in two later attacks are pending.

The second incident happened June 4 at about 11:30 p.m., federal authorities said. Two witnesses reported hearing gunshots about half a mile away from where the fire broke out, and police arrived to find five bullet holes in Google office windows. Surveillance video captured what appears to be the same SUV captured on video May 19.

Authorities believe a .22 caliber handgun was used during the attack.

Police were called a third time about 2 a.m. June 10 after a Google self-driving car was destroyed by fire. Surveillance video captured a young Hispanic man approaching the car with what looked like a squirt gun with a long tube and then a bright flash of fire. The same SUV was also recorded on the surveillance video.

On June 30, shortly after midnight, Mountain View police pulled over a 2004 VolkswagenTouareg they said Diaz was driving on the Google campus. The arresting officer said he could see a gun case and a cylinder with wires coming out of it that was later determined to be a pipe bomb, according to a search warrant affidavit filed with a federal court.

Johnny Luu, a Google spokesman, said a self-driving car was not involved in any of the incidents and said he had no other details about what happened.

According to the affidavit, Diaz told investigators he was responsible for all three attacks and was planning another before he was stopped and arrested.

"Diaz told officers that his motivation behind the attacks was that he felt Google was watching him and that made him upset," the affidavit stated.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to investigate the bombs and met with Google security and local police on June 15 to review surveillance video, according to court documents.

Diaz made a brief appearance in a San Jose federal court Friday, but didn't enter a plea. He remains jailed and is represented by federal public defender Varrel Fuller, who didn't return a phone call Tuesday. Check out games review to see more interesting information 

Obama Sings 'Happy Birthday' to Malia During Last Fourth of July Party at the White House

Fact of life, the Commander-in-chief -- and father -- Barack Obama capped off Fourth of July celebrations at the White House by remarking on the country's history while also taking it upon himself to serenade his eldest daughter, Malia.

"And just because it's a job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I've got one last job," President Obama said at the end of his speech to hundreds gathered in the East Room.

"It just so happens that we celebrate our country's birthday on the same day that we celebrate my oldest daughter's birthday," Obama added before leading the audience to sing "Happy Birthday" to Malia, who later joined her father on stage to give him a celebratory hug.

Singer Janelle Monáe gave the First Daughter a birthday shout out earlier in the evening.

About 20 minutes later, during a rendition of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," Monáe implored Obama President not to leave the White House at the end of his term.

"We want you back, Mr. President! We don't want you to leave," she said.

During his final July Fourth celebration at the White House before he leaves office, Obama called America a "miracle" that needed to be defended and nurtured.

President Obama made the brief comments to hundreds of people gathered inside after rain forced officials to cancel an annual barbecue on the South Lawn for military service members, veterans and their families.

It was the second straight year that weather scuttled the picnic.

Rainforest Ocelot

The Ocelot - animals for kids (Leopardus pardalis), is also known as the ‘Painted Leopard’, ‘McKenney’s Wildcat’ or ‘Manigordo’ (in Costa Rica).

The Ocelot is a wild cat distributed over South America (Argentina and Belize) and Central America and Mexico. It has also been reported as far north as Texas and in Trinidad, Caribbean.

Ocelot Characteristics

The Ocelots appearance is similar to that of the domestic cat. Ocelots are graceful and slender cats and grow to be about 2 – 3 feet (65 – 100 centimetres) long (excluding the tail) and weigh around 9 – 14 kilograms on average. Their tails are 1.5 feet (50 centimetres) in length.

The fur of the Ocelot is similar to that of a Jaguar. It is dark brown with irregular shaped spots and stripes. The stripes are edged with black on a yellow/tawny background giving this medium size cat a most distinctive appearance. The Ocelots underlying colouration varies with its habitat, with the base colour of its fur being a rich yellow/cream in more arid areas to a darker yellow/brown in forested habitats.

While similar in appearance to the Oncilla and the Margay, which inhabit the same regions, the Ocelot is larger.

Ocelot Diet

Ocelots feed mainly on the ground. These fast hunters eat small mammals (monkeys), small deer, rabbits, birds, fish, amphibians and snakes. Ocelots are also very good swimmers.

Mostly found in tropical forests, rarely does the ocelot climb trees though it is an excellent climber. During the night, they tend to hunt along open trails, while during the day, they stay hidden within the deeper bush.

Almost all of the prey that the Ocelot hunts is far smaller than itself. Studies suggest that it follows and finds prey by odour trails, but the Ocelot also has very keen vision, including night vision.

Ocelot Habitat

Fact of life, Ocelots are medium-sized cats that live in rain forests and grasslands. Ocelots appear to be better adapted to habitat disturbance and can live in disturbed forests. However, they can be found in a variety of habitats in Belize, from dry scrub to the dense forests. The ocelot will also sleep in the lower branches of trees in its forest habitat. Male and female cats often share territories which can be up to 3 square miles in area.

Ocelot Behaviour

Ocelots are nocturnal (active at night) and also sometimes diurnal (active during the day) and very territorial. It will fight fiercely, sometimes to the death, in territorial disputes. Like most felines, it is solitary, usually meeting only to mate. However, during the day it rests in trees or other dense foliage and will occasionally share its spot with another Ocelot of the same sex. 

Ocelot Reproduction

When mating, the female will find a den in a cave in a rocky bluff, a hollow tree, or a dense (preferably thorny) thicket. Mating is non-seasonal. The gestation period is estimated to be 70 days. Generally the female will have 2 – 4 kittens, born in the autumn with their eyes closed and a thin covering of hair. The life span of the Ocelot is around 8 – 11 years.

Ocelot Conservation Status

The ocelots fur resembles that of a Jaguar and was once regarded as particularly valuable. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Ocelots have been killed for their fur. The Ocelot was classified a ‘vulnerable’ endangered species from the 1980s until 1996, but is now generally considered ‘least concern’ by the 2006 IUCN Red List.
